Whare Mahana Matiu Island Accommodation

Did you know that there is a whare on Matiu/Somes Island that is available to whānau to hire?

If you haven’t been out to the whare it’s worth it just to take in the view from the lounge window – it’s a picture perfect postcard of Wellington harbour from a whole new perspective.

Matiu Island is home to tuatara, wētā, fluttering shearwaters, penguin, and much more, so for nature lovers it is a great place to be. The island and its inhabitants are cared for by the Department of Conservation who work inconjunction with the Harbour Islands Kaitiaki Board. There are some strict rules and regulations in place around pest control and rubbish removal and so forth which all visitors adhere to. There are a number of Department of Conservation houses on the island, but Whare Mahana is managed by Kathleen Thompson at the Trusts Executive Office.

Whare Mahana is a great place to spend a night or two, or even to pop in for a hot cuppa on a day trip!  It is available for Te Atiawa ki te Whanganui-a-Tara whānau of the Trusts to book.  The whare sleeps 8 people, and is $20 per adult, and $10 per child per night.
